November Column: Technology: Multitasking and Role Playing in Today's Fast-Paced World by Sharon Jagoe

November 28th, 2011

Today’s world is fast paced, demanding and always evolving. On the job we have to be constantly adapting to new and improved ways of doing things. We cannot be afraid of change but rather embrace it and adapt to it to make our lives go by us even faster.  I recall when email made its first debut I would make a point of checking it daily to see if I was lucky enough to get an email. Then, I would check it a few times a day and now I rely on a blackberry to deliver me instantaneous messages. Presently, I complete a job a day on my blackberry.  The internet is at our fingertips in seconds to reveal the answers to just about any question we may have or knowledge we may require.

Technology is evolving at a rate so rapid that we are constantly struggling to catch up to the changes. It is mind boggling to imagine where we have been and where we are headed.

Multitasking is a skill that I believe is the number one trait that allows me to get through my daily agenda.  It is what I do for a living. I typically spend every minute completing a variety of tasks that are of great importance to my ultimate work goal of every day. I believe its keeps me fresh and on my game to be able to work on multiple tasks at the same time.

The ability to role play I believe is key to one’s success. We must be able to adapt to taking on several roles at once as we multitask. It opens doors to new relationships and friendships that can be beneficial for a lifetime. I have several roles that I assume every day. For example: rural service mail carrier, program manager for Junior Achievement, operate a sideline fish business, President of the Bathurst City Farmer’s Market, Member of the Greater Bathurst Business and Professional Women’s Network, Secretary of the Bathurst Rotary Club. Each of these roles has set of guidelines, procedures and expectations that I must strive to meet. I cannot stress how important it is to take on these roles and learn to multitask. I often refer to my circles of people. I have met so many wonderful people from each of these roles I have assumed. These circles overlap many times over. I have grown to be a better member of our society just from surrounding myself with these great people. I believe if your surround yourself by good people only good things can result.

I believe that if we embrace change, learn to multitask and assume many roles we can adapt to the ever changing world we live in and be solid contributors to our community as a whole.

April Column: Politeness Never Goes Out of Style by Jennifer Henry
2013-04-16
Let me start out by saying that I am not a prudish person. Nor am I the personification of perfect manners all the time.  I argue, criticize, disagree and challenge opinions and positions on a regular basis.  The important thing to remember is the HOW I do these things.
