July Column: A crime at sea! by Véronique Laforest

July 24th, 2012

It's a good thing there were no witnesses to this idiotic crime ... at least I hope there weren't any! What's worse, I made the same mistake more than once. I can't seem to help myself; it's as if I didn't learn from previous experience.  Maybe I just like trouble?   Anyway, it's a sure thing that if ridicule could kill, I would be long dead!  Well, I bought myself a kayak.  What has that got to do with it?  Hang on, I'll tell you!  I've been living in the beautiful province of New Brunswick for nearly two years now, and am now officially Acadian. So nice!!  Meanwhile, as a present to me, and until Mr. Alward organizes a banquet in my honour, I bought a kayak.    I've rented one a few times every summer, but I really wanted to have one of my own, so that I could go out wherever and whenever I wanted to. Living this close to the water and not enjoying it would be like going to Miami and staying out of the sun!  Well, for my first excursion, I didn't bother to check the tide tables.  I found myself on the river at Bertrand, near the bridge, paddling in no more than six inches of water....  maybe less.  A good thing it wasn't too cold, since rigorous movement and waning patience soon combined to cool me off in a most disagreeable way!  But I do always wear my life jacket, as required.  Even at low tide.   Never mind, I still had no regrets about my purchase.  It's a sport like any other; after all, you can't expect to be an expert on the first try!  Came another bright, sunny day, and I was putting my gorgeous yellow kayak in the water again.   Forget the river, this time I'd be paddling on the sea!   That's where the kayak belongs.  Better this time, but my arms were seriously sore the next morning.  But this is a good thing, as I am working my upper body, a fine complement to my bicycle tours.  Off I go again, this time in Bathurst Basin.   A great place! Oops… optical illusion… who would have thought that there were only about six inches of water in the middle of the basin?!  This time, I took my kayak for a walk.   I got out, hauled my mount and eventually climbed back in.  Now I use DVDs that teach how to paddle properly and two Web sites that give the tide tables. The morale of this story:  Kayaking is good, but it is even more fun when you are armed with the proper information!  And not alone!  Does anyone out there want to come for a ride?!

April Column: Politeness Never Goes Out of Style by Jennifer Henry
2013-04-16
Let me start out by saying that I am not a prudish person. Nor am I the personification of perfect manners all the time.  I argue, criticize, disagree and challenge opinions and positions on a regular basis.  The important thing to remember is the HOW I do these things.
